Abstract
Objective: To describe the prevalence of congenital anomalies in Korea.

Methods: This was a hospital-based registry study of 10,868 infants in five community hospitals in Korea from January 2009 through December 2010. Data were obtained by a case-finding program with or without case confirmation. Pooled birth prevalence estimates for 76 birth defects based on EUROCAT, European surveillance of congenital anomalies were calculated. Cases with minor anomalies defined according to EUROCAT guidelines for exclusion were not included into the group of birth defects.

Results: 1) The prevalence of anomalous infants including cases of live birth, stillbirth, and termination of pregnancy was 348.7 per 10,000 registered births, 2) the prevalence of birth defects was 466.5 per 10,000 registered births, 3) the most common categories of congenital anomalies were congenital heart defects and limb anomalies (92.0 vs. 92.9 per 10,000 births, respectively), and 4) the prevalence of aneuploidy was 36.8 per 10,000 births.

Conclusion: Accurate and nationwide data of congenital anomalies are needed for monitoring trends, assessing prevention efforts, determining service planning, and understanding the burden of disease due to birth defects in Korea.
